Sound Recordist Wales
I’m a freelance location sound recordist with twenty years experience working on observational documentaries, current affairs programmes and corporate productions. Recent credits include: 'Rich Kids Go Skint' Kalel Productions for Ch5 STAR, ‘Grand Designs’ Boundless Productions for Channel 4, and ‘Songs of Praise’ Avanti Media for BBC One, amongst many others (which are listed on the Work History page).
I have bases in Wales, West Midlands and London.
I’m particularly interested in working on projects that lean towards any of these end results: educational, ethical, artistic, ‘good-cause’, co-operative, collaborative, meaningful, pro-social. And I’m particularly interested in working with any of these general areas of subject matter: sustainability, environment, society, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, the arts, social history, the natural world, politics.
I’m a full member of IPS (Institute of Professional Sound). I hold an NVQX3 certificate in Health and Safety, I have an enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service criminal records check) and I have a current public liability insurance policy. I hold a valid passport, a full UK driving license, I have a basic level of conversational Welsh and as any sound recordist should, I have a PMSE license to use radio mic equipment!
My main kit comprises a Sound Devices 633 six channel mixer/dual-media recorder which enables me to simultaneously supply high quality Bwav files as well as smaller mp3 files for transcription purposes. I carry several different microphones for dialogue recording depending on the environment/circumstances and also two handheld, presenter ‘stick mics’. I have six radio mic kits and Timecode Systems timecode solutions to keep my mixer and up to four cameras in frame-accurate sync all day. I carry a spare mixer in case the unimaginable should happen in the middle of nowhere. Unless otherwise requested, I back up all my recordings, as a matter of course.
This calendar is always up-to-date.
Key: Busy = Booked. HP = Heavy pencil. LP = Light pencil.

“NextShoot has worked with Richard on a number of projects for key clients. Richard is always our first choice for sound as he embodies professionalism. He brings to each job a thoughtfulness in the preparation stage: how the sound will be covered for each specific set-up and the equipment required. He has very good kit of his own, and on complex set-ups has gone the extra mile to help us source any equipment we have needed to hire in. On set he is very comfortable and professional with talent and other crew members, he is quick to find solutions under pressure and, crucially, captures excellent quality sound. He is also extremely good company. We can't recommend Richard highly enough. 5 stars.”
Dominic Sutherland - Director - NextShoot
“Richard worked with us on a branded documentary, we found Richard to be a great asset to the team. He was warm, professional and hard working. It was a tight shoot schedule but nothing was a problem for Richard and the quality of his audio work in a variety of challenging locations was excellent. I would highly recommend him.”
Jonathan Davies – Producer - Mighty Fine Productions
